ISL Matchweek 3 Preview & Predictions: East Bengal Favourites, Kerala Eye Comeback, FC Goa Under Pressure
The Indian Super League moves into Matchweek 3, with East Bengal looking to continue their strong start, NorthEast United finding their rhythm and Kerala Blasters desperate to respond after a heavy defeat.
Here are our predictions for all six fixtures.
East Bengal vs Inter Kashi
East Bengal look like serious title contenders already. Their 4-0 victory over Churchill Brothers showed just how dangerous Antonio López Habas' side can be.
With Anwar Ali, Jeakson Singh and plenty of attacking quality, East Bengal have one of the strongest squads in the competition.
Inter Kashi, meanwhile, deserve credit for their performances under Carlos Vaz Pinto. Managing an all-Indian squad is no easy task, but the Portuguese coach has made them competitive.
Still, the difference in squad depth could prove decisive.
Prediction: East Bengal win.
Odisha FC vs NorthEast United
NorthEast United are playing some outstanding attacking football under Juan Pedro Benali.
Their four-goal performance against Kerala Blasters highlighted their ability to transition quickly from defence to attack. Alaaeddine Ajaraie continues to look threatening.
Odisha, on the other hand, are still finding their chemistry. The players need time to understand one another, particularly in difficult matches against established opponents.
Unless Odisha improve significantly, NorthEast should have too much firepower.
Prediction: NorthEast United win, scoring at least twice.
Churchill Brothers vs Punjab FC
This could be one of the closest matches of the weekend.
Churchill Brothers started their campaign positively but suffered a heavy defeat against East Bengal. Punjab FC have collected four points from their opening two matches and possess some exciting young players.
Both sides have reasons to be optimistic, but neither looks overwhelmingly stronger.
Expect goals at both ends.
Prediction: 1-1 or 2-2 draw.
Kerala Blasters vs Mumbai City FC
One of the weekend's most interesting fixtures.
Kerala Blasters return to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium looking to bounce back from their heavy defeat against NorthEast United.
Mumbai City, now under Manolo Márquez, have yet to fully convince. Their underlying attacking numbers might offer encouragement, but the team still appears to be adjusting to the manager's approach.
Kerala have attacking quality through players like Adrian Luna and Korou Singh, and the home crowd could make a significant difference.
Manolo may attempt to control the match through defensive organisation, but Kerala should have enough going forward.
Prediction: Kerala Blasters win, scoring two or more goals.
Mohun Bagan vs Chennaiyin FC
Mohun Bagan enter this fixture as clear favourites.
Chennaiyin have shown glimpses of quality, but their overall performances have not been particularly convincing. Their attacking threat could cause problems, especially through Tank, but they will need a much more complete team performance.
Mohun Bagan have the quality to control possession and create opportunities against Chennaiyin's defence.
Prediction: Mohun Bagan win, with at least two goals.
FC Goa vs Sporting Club Delhi
FC Goa's recent performance against Fortis FC raised some concerns.
If Goa continue playing with the same defensive vulnerabilities and lack of control, Sporting Club Delhi could punish them.
Delhi have shown enough tactical organisation to make life difficult for opponents. Goa will need to improve considerably to avoid dropping points.
This is perhaps the boldest prediction of the weekend.
Prediction: Sporting Club Delhi win if Goa fail to improve.
