India U15 made a winning start to the inaugural FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival 2026, defeating Laos 4–2 in their opening Group K fixture at the Hovsan Competition Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Saturday.
Coached by Bibiano Fernandes, the Blue Colts showed attacking promise and resilience in an entertaining encounter. Laos made life difficult for India, twice finding the net, but the Indian youngsters responded to secure all three points.
Why Is This Victory Significant?
This is more than just an opening-day win for India's young footballers. The FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival brings together youth teams from across the world, offering Indian players valuable exposure to international football at an early stage of their development.
India's victory also gives them a positive start in Group K, where they face Cameroon, Grenada, Bahrain and Senegal.
Unlike conventional 11-a-side football, this competition follows an 8v8 format, with two 20-minute halves. The format demands quick decisions, technical quality and adaptability.
For Bibiano Fernandes, the performance offered encouragement, particularly in attack. However, conceding twice against Laos also highlights the defensive improvements needed before facing stronger opponents.
What Comes Next for India?
India will face Cameroon and Grenada on October 25, followed by Bahrain and Senegal on October 26.
The real test begins now. Winning against Laos is a positive first step, but how these youngsters perform against teams from different footballing backgrounds will provide a better indication of their development.
For Indian football, the bigger achievement will be turning this international exposure into long-term player development, rather than judging the entire campaign by one result.
